Out of all the six engines, four engines have been tried. 2 versions of 1.2 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesels. All of it has a 5 speed manual gearbox. Range topping 120 bhp 1.4 TSI petrol has a seven speed auto box. You might find lower powered engines a bit dull at lower revs but in mid range they pick up very well. 1.4 TSI is faster.
Skoda Rapid does not have a good nimbleness as compared to Ford Focus or VW Gold although the body roll is very well controlled. You might find backend light under had braking plus it does not offer a good turn in tight corners. The rigid suspension settings makes the drive uncomfortable and offers poor resistance on road bumps at low speed and on faster road it unsettles pretty easily.
1.2 TSI petrol engines offer a good revving but 1.6 TDI is grumpy which is especially visible at lower speeds. The wind noise from side windows and door mirrors increases and can be problematic. On the road it fades into the background. There are lots of road noises at almost all the speeds.
Skoda Rapid comes at a good value package. It does not cost much and is reasonable enough. Engines also cost less and are very fuel efficient. Other costs accrued during running are also less as compared to the rivals and emits lesser amount of carbon dioxide.
Quality and reliability gets a three star. It has a simple and nice appearance. Despite the use of hard material and flexible materials, it has a great assembly. All the parts are tried and tested.
Safety and security is great which can be given 5 stars. It has 6 airbags, isofix child seat mounting points and great stability control. Although many high tech safety equipments that comes with other hi tech model are not there. Security kit consists of a remote central lock and an alarm.
The driving position is good with a seat that can adjust and an adjustable steering wheel. But the seat is flat and offers lesser support.
Space at the back is good with a sumptuous leg room. The boot is large and the opening is also big, square shaped. But it comes with 2 minor quibbles which can be a drawback.
